verified on Title 42's 8,356 sections); make check green. make
legal-us-code default now covers every title.

# 42 U.S.C. § 1881a - Alan T. Waterman Award
## Text
(a) Establishment; amounts; terms The National Science Foundation is authorized to establish the Alan T. Waterman Award for research or advanced study in the mathematical, physical, medical, biological, engineering, behavioral, social, or other sciences. The award authorized by this section shall consist of a suitable medal and a grant to support further research or study by the recipient. The National Science Board will periodically establish the amounts and terms of such grants under this section.
(b) Purpose Awards under this section shall be made to recognize and encourage the work of younger scientists whose capabilities and accomplishments show exceptional promise of significant future achievement.
(c) Number Not more than three awards may be made under this section in any one fiscal year.

Amendments2007—Subsec. (c). Pub. L. 11069 amended subsec. (c) generally. Prior to amendment, subsec. (c) read as follows: “No more than one award shall be made under this section in any one fiscal year.” 1998—Subsec. (a). Pub. L. 105207 substituted “social,” for “social, social,”. 1985—Subsec. (a). Pub. L. 99159 substituted provisions requiring the National Science Board to periodically establish amounts and terms of grants, for provisions limiting the grant awarded to $50,000 per year for a period not exceeding three years. 1980—Subsec. (a). Pub. L. 96516 inserted “, behavioral, social” after “engineering”.
