The Public Employees' Retirement Law permits a member of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) who is employed by a school employer, the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges, or the State Department of Education to elect to have specified service excluded from coverage by the Defined Benefit Program of the State Teachers' Retirement Plan and instead be subject to coverage by PERS, as specified.
